How our calculators work
What each calculator does, where its figures come from and what it can't tell you.
What this site is
Life Insurance Calculator is a set of free calculators for people in the UK thinking about life insurance, income protection and over 50s plans. You don't need to sign up or give any contact details. Everything you type stays in your browser.
We don't sell insurance and we aren't an insurer, a broker or a financial adviser. The results are estimates to help you think about cover, not quotes or advice. If you want advice on your own situation, speak to an adviser regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. MoneyHelper explains how to choose one.
Where the figures come from
- Prices. Monthly prices are estimated from prices insurers publish on their own websites, mainly Aviva's level term examples. Each price page lists its sources and the date they were correct. The cost by age page compares our estimates with other insurers' published prices.
- Insurer limits and plan details. Figures such as the most an income protection policy will pay, or when over 50s premiums stop, come from the insurers' own pages. We cite each one next to the figure.
- Tax and state benefits. Inheritance tax allowances and Statutory Sick Pay come from GOV.UK.
What the calculators leave out
Real prices depend on your health, weight, medical and family history, job, hobbies and the insurer you choose. Our calculators don't ask about any of these, so a real quote can be higher or lower. Where we show a price, we show a range for that reason.
Each calculator page explains its own formula and assumptions, with a worked example you can check by hand.
Who runs this site
The site is run by Herdo MB. If you spot a mistake or a figure that's out of date, email contact@lifeinsurancecalculator.me.uk.
Keeping it up to date
We recheck prices, insurer limits and tax thresholds when they change and at least once a year. The date each figure was correct is shown beside it or in the sources list. The insurer's own website is always the final word.
